How to start yoga at home

You roll out the mat, press play on a class called "for everyone" and within minutes you are lost, sore and watching the screen instead of breathing. Starting at home works when you go slower than the video, learn a handful of poses properly and show up often.

A beginner routine, then yoga apps. If you are pregnant, injured, recovering from surgery or have a heart, blood pressure, joint or back condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist first and look for a qualified teacher. Stop if anything hurts.

Make a spot that is always ready

A mat and enough room to stretch your arms are all you need. Leave the mat out where you can see it; it makes the next session easier to start.

Go slower than the video

Pick classes marked for beginners and pause when you need to. Use blocks, a cushion or a chair to make poses easier. Moving within a comfortable range matters more than how far you bend.

Let the breath lead

Breathe slowly through the nose and match movement to breath. If you hold your breath, ease off. For calmer practice, see how to start meditating and how to use breathing exercises to calm down.

Keep it short and regular

A short session several times a week beats one long class you dread. For a different style, see how to start a kundalini practice. Compare apps in yoga apps.
