How to start meditating when you think you can’t
Many beginners give up on meditation because they think they are doing it wrong: their mind keeps wandering. That wandering is not failure, it is the exercise. Every time you notice you drifted and come back, you train attention. Start shorter than feels serious, use a guide, and let consistency matter more than length.

Begin shorter than you think
A few minutes every day beats a long session once a week. Short sessions are easier to start, and starting is the hard part. Lengthen them only when the short ones feel easy.
Let a voice guide you
Guided meditations tell you where to put your attention, so you are not sitting in silence wondering what to do. Try a few styles, such as breath focus, body scan or loving-kindness, and keep the one you return to.
Treat wandering as the workout
Your mind will drift to plans, worries and memories. Notice it, label it “thinking” if that helps, and come back to the breath. Each return is one repetition. A session full of returns is a good session.
Tie it to something you already do
Meditate after brushing your teeth, after your first coffee or before bed, so it rides on an existing habit. For calming breathing on its own, see how to use breathing exercises to calm down; compare apps in meditation apps.
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Start tiny | a few minutes, not half an hour | easy to repeat |
| 2. Use a guide | guided audio or an app | no guessing what to do |
| 3. Anchor on the breath | notice it going in and out | something to come back to |
| 4. Expect wandering | notice, return, no judgement | that is the practice |
| 5. Same time daily | after coffee, before bed | it becomes a habit |
Frequently asked questions
How do I start meditating as a beginner?
Start with a few minutes a day, use guided sessions, focus on your breath, expect your mind to wander and practise at the same time each day.
What if I cannot stop thinking while meditating?
That is normal. Noticing a thought and returning to the breath is the practice itself.
Is a short meditation worth it?
Yes. Short daily sessions are easier to keep and build the habit; you can lengthen them later.
