How to hide private details in a screenshot
A screenshot of a chat, a bank page or a delivery note carries more than you meant to share: a phone number in the corner, a name in the header, an address half hidden. Hiding it properly takes a minute. Hiding it badly can leave it readable.
A safe routine, then redaction apps. Light blur, pixelation and semi-transparent markers can leave text readable or recoverable; solid opaque boxes and cropping are safer.

Crop before you cover
The safest detail is the one you cut out. Crop away headers, notification bars and side panels, then cover what is left.
Use solid shapes, not blur
Draw a filled, opaque box over names, numbers and faces. A highlighter pen in a markup tool is often semi-transparent; draw over it twice or use a shape instead.
Mind the hidden data
Screenshots usually carry less metadata than camera photos, but photos you share may include location. Turn it off in the share options. For IDs and contracts, see how to share ID documents safely.
Check, then send
Zoom in on the edited copy and look for reflections, page edges and repeated details elsewhere in the image. To keep the edited copies tidy, see how to organize your screenshots; compare apps in redaction apps.
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crop first | keep only what matters | less to hide |
| 2. Cover with solid boxes | opaque shape, full coverage | nothing shows through |
| 3. Skip light blur | avoid soft blur and pixels | text can stay readable |
| 4. Check location data | strip it before sending | photo can reveal place |
| 5. Look again | zoom in before sharing | catch missed details |
Frequently asked questions
Is blurring enough to hide text in a screenshot?
Not always. Light blur and pixelation can leave text readable; use a solid opaque box or crop it out.
Why can I still see text under the marker?
Many highlighter tools are semi-transparent. Use a filled shape or draw over the area until it is fully covered.
Can a photo reveal where I am?
Camera photos can include location data. Turn location off in the share options before you send.
