Apps to check your internet speed

To see whether the problem is the WiFi, the operator or the app, run a speed test. Speedtest by Ookla is the best known. FAST from Netflix gives a result in one tap with no ads. nPerf has a Ukrainian interface and also tests browsing and streaming, and Opensignal adds a signal dashboard and maps.

How we chose: apps that measure internet speed on the phone, sold by their own developer or by a seller listed as a trader on the App Store, with features taken from each app’s store description. No prices, download counts or ratings.

Speedtest by Ookla: WiFi, mobile and coverage maps

Speedtest by Ookla tests WiFi and mobile network speed against servers around the world. Speedtest Maps show coverage and performance by provider, so you can compare operators where you live, and a video test shows how well streaming works on your current connection. The app also offers its own VPN.

FAST: one tap, no ads

FAST Speed Test from Netflix shows how fast your connection is on mobile or broadband with a simple design that is quick to read, and it is ad-free. Good when you just need a number.

nPerf and Opensignal: more than speed

nPerf tests download and upload speed, latency, browsing speed and video streaming, keeps a history of results on a map and shows network coverage and operator performance nearby. It has a Ukrainian interface. Opensignal measures download, upload and latency on 3G, 4G, 5G and WiFi, checks the streaming experience and has a signal dashboard and ping test.

Tips for an honest result

Run the test two or three times and close downloads in other apps first. Test near the router and in the room where the signal drops to see the difference. To map WiFi coverage around the home, see WiFi heatmap apps. To manage your mobile plan itself, see lifecell vs Vodafone.
