How to browse privately on your phone

You searched for running shoes once. Now running shoes follow you from site to site for a week. Private browsing is not about having something to hide. It is about deciding who gets to watch, and a few settings on your phone change that.

What private mode really does, the settings that matter, then browser apps. Private or incognito mode stops your phone from saving history and cookies after you close the tab. It does not hide you from your mobile network, your employer’s Wi-Fi or the sites you log into.

Know the limits of private mode

A private tab forgets what you did once you close it. The sites you visit, your network provider and anyone running the Wi-Fi can still see that you connected. Logging in tells the site who you are either way.

Turn on tracker blocking

Many browsers can block cross-site trackers and third-party cookies. Look in the privacy settings, and compare browsers that do it by default in browser apps. For ads, see how to block ads on your phone.

Review site permissions

Sites ask for your location, camera, microphone and notifications. Check the list in your browser settings and remove what you do not need.

Protect the logins

Saved passwords are only as safe as the phone. Use a password manager and two-step sign-in; see how to start using a password manager and how to set up two-factor authentication.
