How to organize your screenshots

Screenshots are the fastest way to save anything: a recipe, a ticket, a quote, a map, an error message. They are also the fastest way to bury your photo library. The fix is to treat screenshots as temporary: most can go within days, a few deserve a proper home, and search should do the finding.

A simple routine, then photo cleaner and screenshot apps, with a section for screenshot apps rising by visits on the Censuus ranking.

Treat most screenshots as temporary

Many screenshots are only useful for minutes: a code, a confirmation, a map before going offline. Delete them as soon as you are done. A quick weekly review of the screenshots album catches the rest.

Give the keepers a purpose

Group the screenshots you want to keep by why you took them: recipes, travel, shopping ideas, work, inspiration. Albums, tags or a screenshot app keep them out of your camera roll and easy to browse.

Search by what is inside

Phones and some apps can read text in images, so you can search for a word you remember instead of scrolling. Some screenshot tools also rename files based on their content.

Move what matters somewhere safer

Tickets, documents and important information belong in notes, a documents app or a secure vault, not between holiday photos. For a full clear-out, see how to clean up your photo library and compare tools in photo cleaner apps.
