Apps to control your air conditioner
A Wi-Fi air conditioner is run from its maker’s app: Cooper&Hunter Remote or Cooper&Hunter Smart, GREE+, SmartThings for Samsung, LG ThinQ, ONECTA for Daikin, HaierSmartAir2, TCL Home and SmartHome for Midea. All of them are free to install, and every one except the two Cooper&Hunter apps has a Ukrainian interface. The unit needs Wi-Fi built in or a Wi-Fi module fitted.
How we picked: only each maker’s own app, from its App Store and Google Play listing. We compared what each one says it does: remote control, schedules, sleep mode, energy data and fault diagnosis. We left out universal infrared remotes and apps whose maker does not say which units they support.
Cooper&Hunter: Remote or Smart?
Cooper&Hunter has two control apps, and the right one depends on the unit. Cooper&Hunter Remote works with Wi-Fi-ready units once a C&H Wi-Fi kit is fitted to each: switch them on and off, set the temperature per room, change mode and fan speed up to turbo, set daily or weekly schedules and a sleep curve for the night. Its check function scans for error codes when something goes wrong. Cooper&Hunter Smart is for the Nordic series: remote control and status monitoring, a group of air conditioners from several phones, and network setup through EZ mode. The model is on the unit’s label and in its manual.
Gree, Samsung, LG and Daikin
GREE+ is Gree’s official app: add your appliances, control them from anywhere and see their status in real time. SmartThings runs Samsung air conditioners together with other Samsung and third-party devices, with scenes, routines by time, weather or device status, shared access and SmartThings Energy. LG ThinQ controls LG appliances from anywhere, shows energy use with saving goals and runs Smart Diagnosis for faults. ONECTA covers connected Daikin air conditioners and Altherma heat pumps: room temperature and mode, schedules, a holiday mode, energy graphs by day, week and month, and voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant.
Haier, TCL and Midea
HaierSmartAir2 controls Haier home air conditioners remotely and has a sleep curve and a cloud timer; some newer Haier appliances use a different app, so check the manual. TCL Home is one hub for TCL air conditioners, TVs, robot vacuums and air purifiers. SmartHome replaced the MSmartHome and Midea Air apps and runs Midea and Comfee appliances: remote control, notifications, voice control and automations such as switching the air conditioner on when it gets hot outside.
If the app cannot find the air conditioner
Apps such as GREE+ ask for location and nearby-device access only to find the unit and your Wi-Fi when you add it, so allow them during setup. If your model has no Wi-Fi at all, the maker’s app will not see it; check in the manual which Wi-Fi module and which app the model supports. During outages a portable power station can keep the router online.
