iOS 27.1 release date: the iPhone Duo SDK without a public beta

Short answer: Apple has not announced a release date for iOS 27.1, and it has posted no iOS 27.1 beta in its Developer Releases feed, public or developer. What exists is the iOS 27.1 SDK inside Xcode 27.1, now at Release Candidate (27A9275, October 5, 2026). The same Xcode ships iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, macOS and visionOS at 27, so 27.1 is iPhone only, and Apple ties Xcode 27.1 to iPhone Duo, which reaches customers on October 23, 2026. Meanwhile the general update track has moved on to iOS 27.2, at beta 4 since October 13.

Why there is no iOS 27.1 beta to install

Apple usually posts each iOS beta in its Developer Releases feed. For 27.1 it posted only Xcode builds, and the Xcode 27.1 RC notes list SDKs for iOS 27.1 next to iPadOS 27 and the other 27 platforms. Apple’s October 5 note says recompiling with Xcode 27.1 adds development support for iPhone Duo. Put together, 27.1 is the software layer for the new device, and you test it in the iPhone Duo Simulator rather than on a beta you install on your own phone. If you want the next update for existing iPhones, that is iOS 27.2, now in beta 4.

What the iOS 27.1 SDK changes for your build

Xcode 27.1 RC includes Swift 6.4, supports on-device debugging on iOS 17 and later, and needs a Mac with macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. One trap: projects that use APIs specific to iOS 27.1 show compile errors such as «undeclared identifier» or «cannot find» when building for Mac Catalyst. Apple’s workaround is a build-time conditional, #if !targetEnvironment(macCatalyst) in Swift. Previews gain a Display group in the overrides picker, so you can preview content on a device’s alternative display.

Testing in the iPhone Duo Simulator

Expect the first Simulator launch to take several minutes. In the iPhone Duo runtime, StandBy is unavailable and running and debugging most app extensions is unavailable, so test widgets and other extensions on another runtime for now. To see the app across poses and orientations, use Device Hub in Xcode 27, and for layout and submission rules read our iPhone Duo developer guide.

Should you ship with Xcode 27.1 now?

If you want your app ready for iPhone Duo on October 23, yes: Apple says you can submit iPhone Duo optimized apps now, and recompiling with Xcode 27.1 is the step that adds support. A Release Candidate is the build Apple expects to ship, though it can still be replaced by a later one. Apps that do not target iPhone Duo can stay on Xcode 27 and move with the next update. For Mac and macOS requirements by version, see Xcode 27 system requirements.

Frequently asked questions

When is iOS 27.1 released?

Apple has not announced a date. The iOS 27.1 SDK ships in Xcode 27.1, at Release Candidate since October 5, 2026, and Apple ties Xcode 27.1 to iPhone Duo, which goes on sale October 23, 2026.

Is there an iOS 27.1 public or developer beta?

Not as of October 14, 2026. Apple’s Developer Releases feed lists Xcode 27.1 beta and RC with the iOS 27.1 SDK, but no iOS 27.1 beta for existing iPhones. The beta track for those is iOS 27.2.

What Xcode do I need for iOS 27.1?

Xcode 27.1, currently RC 27A9275, which needs a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later and includes Swift 6.4.

Why do I get «undeclared identifier» errors for Mac Catalyst with Xcode 27.1?

It is a known issue: APIs specific to iOS 27.1 fail to compile for Mac Catalyst. Wrap them in #if !targetEnvironment(macCatalyst) in Swift until Apple fixes it.
