iOS 27.2 beta 4: release date and what’s new for developers

Short answer: iOS 27.2 is in beta. Apple released iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a) on October 13, 2026, alongside beta 4 of iPadOS, macOS, visionOS and watchOS 27.2, eight days after beta 3. The SDK ships with Xcode 27.2, now at beta 2. Apple has not announced a release date. For developers the changes to check are a new App Tracking Transparency prompt for the EU, zero default layout margins on UIView, and Xcode’s new JSON project format.

The new tracking prompt for EU users

The biggest change in the iOS 27.2 release notes is in App Tracking Transparency. The framework now supports an alternative expanded prompt and re-prompting once a year for users in the EU. Apple says the alternative prompt is required for users in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania. The new request API has been renamed twice during the beta. In beta 4 the Objective-C method is requestTrackingAuthorizationPreferringExpandedInterface:, after earlier forms with usingExpandedInterface: and preferExpandedInterface:, so code written against beta 2 or 3 will not compile until you update the call. If your app tracks, test the prompt flow on beta 4 with those regions. The basics of the prompt are in our App Tracking Transparency guide.

UIView layout margins are now zero

A UIKit change that can shift layouts quietly: on iOS 27.1 and later, the default layout margins for a UIView are zero. A view controller still gives its own view systemMinimumLayoutMargins, which depend on the presentation context. A subview that relied on default margins should set preservesSuperviewLayoutMargins to true to inherit them. Check screens that pin content to layout margins rather than to the safe area or explicit constants.

Xcode 27.2: JSON projects and agent tools

Xcode 27.2 beta 2 includes Swift 6.4 and the 27.2 SDKs, supports on-device debugging on iOS 17 and later, and needs a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. It adds a JSON-based project format, .xcproj, which Apple describes as more readable, merge-friendly and easier for coding agents to edit. You turn it on in the File inspector, and such projects also open in earlier versions of Xcode 27. The coding assistant gains a GetCodeCoverage MCP tool that reports coverage from the latest test result, and the RenderPreview tool can now list and pick render destinations. Device Hub gets several input fixes, including support for iOS 17 simulators. For wiring agents into Xcode, see Xcode’s MCP server and Device Hub.

Known issues worth knowing before you test

Apple lists a few issues that are easy to mistake for your own bugs. Cloning a simulator device on runtime 27.2 can fail because of file permissions. Apple’s workaround deletes the stray sandbox files inside the source device’s data folder, and the exact command is in the iOS 27.2 release notes. On iPhone Duo, screenshots and recordings may be black for a few minutes after booting. In Xcode 27.2, the macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS SDKs wrongly offer 27.1 as a deployment target, which can cause unexpected behavior. Projects using iOS 27.1 APIs may not compile for Mac Catalyst, and Apple suggests isolating that code with #if !targetEnvironment(macCatalyst). For StoreKit testing, three SKTestSession bugs are fixed, while buying a subscription that is part of a bundle can wrongly unbundle it. Beta 4 also lists user-facing issues your testers may report: Describe a Shortcut can fail with “Something went wrong”, and personalized summaries may not generate in the Health Insights tab.

Which Xcode to ship with

Betas are for testing, not for App Store submissions. Xcode 27.1 reached release candidate on October 5, 2026 with the iOS 27.1 SDK, and Apple asks developers to recompile with it for iPhone Duo; see our iPhone Duo guide. For what changed at iOS 27 itself, read the UIScene lifecycle requirement.

Where Censuus fits

An update is a good moment to put your app in front of new users. Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw, and adding your app is free on the List my app form. Placement comes from traffic and sponsorship: apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher.

Frequently asked questions

When is iOS 27.2 coming out?

Apple has not announced a date. The latest build is iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a), released to developers on October 13, 2026, eight days after beta 3.

What is new in iOS 27.2 for developers?

An alternative expanded App Tracking Transparency prompt with yearly re-prompting for EU users, required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania, plus StoreKit testing fixes. Since iOS 27.1, UIView default layout margins are zero.

Which Xcode do I need for iOS 27.2?

The iOS 27.2 SDK is bundled with Xcode 27.2, currently beta 2, which needs a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later.

What is the .xcproj format in Xcode 27.2?

A JSON-based project format that Apple says is more readable, merge-friendly and easier for coding agents to edit. You enable it in the File inspector, and the project still opens in earlier versions of Xcode 27.

Why does cloning my iOS 27.2 simulator fail?

It is a known issue caused by incorrect file permissions. Apple’s release notes give a workaround that deletes temporary sandbox files in the source device’s data folder.
