Xcode 26 and the iOS 26 SDK requirement for App Store Connect

Short answer: since April 28, 2026, every app or game uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the 26 SDKs: iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 or watchOS 26, which ship with Xcode 26. Your app can still support older systems: Xcode 26 builds for iOS 15 and later, so raising the SDK does not force you to drop users on older iPhones.

What changed on April 28, 2026

Apple announced on February 3, 2026 that from April 28, 2026 apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the 26 SDKs for their platform. The rule is about the upload, so it covers new apps and every update: a bug fix built with an older Xcode is rejected at upload, while builds already on the store stay available. The 26 SDKs ship with Xcode 26, so in practice the requirement means building with Xcode 26 or later.

Next: the 27 SDKs from April 2027

On September 9, 2026 Apple announced the next step: starting April 2027, apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 SDK or later, and with the tvOS 27, visionOS 27 or watchOS 27 SDK for those platforms. Apple gives the month, not a day. The 27 SDKs ship with Xcode 27, which needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. It still builds for iOS 15 and later, but the oldest watchOS target moves to watchOS 9, and on-device debugging and simulators start at iOS 17. The compiler is Swift 6.4, with Swift 6, 5 and 4 language modes.

Which macOS you need for Xcode 26

Apple’s system requirements list macOS Sequoia 15.6 as the minimum for Xcode 26, and it also runs on macOS Tahoe 26. Later 26.x updates can raise the minimum, so check the system requirements table for the exact release you install. Developing for visionOS needs a Mac with Apple silicon. If a CI machine or an old Mac cannot run Sequoia 15.6, it can no longer produce uploadable builds.

You do not have to drop old iPhones

The SDK is what you build with; the deployment target is the oldest system you support. Xcode 26 still accepts deployment targets down to iOS 15, tvOS 15, watchOS 8 and visionOS 1, and it can debug on devices running those versions. Building with the iOS 26 SDK changes default behaviors and appearance on iOS 26 devices, so test there, but your minimum supported version stays your decision.

A checklist for the switch

Update Xcode on every build machine, including CI runners, and confirm they run macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. Build once with Xcode 26 and fix new warnings and errors; the compiler is Swift 6.2, and Swift 5 and Swift 4.2 language modes still work, so you do not need to migrate to Swift 6 mode to ship. Update SDKs and CocoaPods or Swift packages that fail to build. Run the app on an iOS 26 device or simulator and check layout, bars and system controls, then upload a TestFlight build before the release you actually need.

Where Censuus fits

Keeping the app shippable is the floor; being found is the rest. Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw, and adding your app is free on the List my app form. Placement comes from traffic and sponsorship: apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher.

Frequently asked questions

When did Xcode 26 become required for App Store uploads?

From April 28, 2026, apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the 26 SDKs, which come with Xcode 26. Apple announced it on February 3, 2026.

What macOS version does Xcode 26 require?

Apple lists macOS Sequoia 15.6 as the minimum for Xcode 26. Later 26.x releases can raise it, so check Apple’s system requirements table for your version.

Can I still support iOS 15 after building with the iOS 26 SDK?

Yes. Xcode 26 supports deployment targets from iOS 15, so building with the new SDK does not force you to raise your minimum iOS version.

Do apps already on the App Store have to be rebuilt?

The requirement applies to uploads. Apps already live stay available, but the next update has to be built with the 26 SDK.

When will Xcode 27 be required for App Store uploads?

Apple says that starting April 2027, uploads must be built with the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 SDK or later, which come with Xcode 27. Xcode 27 needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later.

Do I have to use Swift 6 language mode with Xcode 26?

No. Xcode 26 ships the Swift 6.2 compiler and still supports Swift 5, Swift 4.2 and Swift 4 language modes.
