Apps for printers

Each printer maker has one official app: HP, formerly HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel and Brother Mobile Connect. They set the printer up on Wi-Fi, print and scan from the phone and show ink or toner levels. Pocket printers have their own: Phomemo for Phomemo thermal printers and instax mini Link for Fujifilm’s photo printers. Canon PRINT and Epson Smart Panel have a Ukrainian interface.

How we picked: only the app each printer maker publishes, from its App Store and Google Play listing, with the seller checked. Searching for a printer app turns up many look-alikes from other sellers, so the table names the official publisher. We do not quote ink plans or prices.

HP: the app is now just “HP”

The official HP printer app was called HP Smart and is now named simply HP, published by HP Inc. It guides you through setting up a new printer, prints and scans from the phone, checks ink levels and connects you to support. Searching the store for “HP Smart” also shows printer apps from other sellers with similar names, so check that the seller is HP Inc. before you install.

Canon, Epson and Brother

Canon PRINT sets up a Canon printer, prints and scans, checks consumable levels and prints through the cloud; it supports PIXMA, MAXIFY and many imageRUNNER and other laser models, with some exceptions. Epson Smart Panel sets up and runs supported Epson printers and scanners over Wi-Fi with action tiles; Epson says that for models not on its supported list you should use Epson iPrint for printers or Document Scan for scanners instead. Brother Mobile Connect links a Brother printer with a guided setup, prints, scans, shares documents, shows usage history and manages the EcoPro ink and toner subscription.

Which app for a mini printer?

Small pocket printers each use their maker’s app, and the name is on the box or in the manual. Phomemo runs Phomemo thermal printers such as T02, M02, M08F and M832, for notes, to-do lists, photos and QR codes. instax mini Link is only for Fujifilm’s instax mini Link printers: print from photos or videos, add frames and collages, and use the printer’s button as a remote shutter for the phone camera.

Scanning without a scanner

If you only need to scan a page, the phone camera is often enough: see document scanner apps. To combine photos before printing, collage apps.
