How to secure your home Wi-Fi router

Your router still has the password printed on the sticker, and the device list shows names you do not recognise. The router is the front door of your home internet. A few settings, done once, keep strangers out and your devices safer.

A security checklist, then router apps. Settings and names differ by brand and model; use the router maker’s own app or admin page, and keep a note of new passwords in a password manager.

Change the passwords first

Replace the default admin password and the Wi-Fi password on the sticker with long, unique ones. Store them in a password manager; see how to start using a password manager.

Keep the router updated

Router apps show whether firmware is current and many can update automatically. Old firmware is one of the common ways home networks get attacked.

Split guests and gadgets off

Put visitors and smart gadgets on a guest network so they cannot see your laptop or phone. Turn off features you do not need, such as remote admin or WPS.

Check who is connected

Look at the device list now and then and remove anything you do not recognise, then change the Wi-Fi password. For weak signal in some rooms, see how to fix Wi-Fi dead zones at home. Compare apps in router apps.
