How to plan your ski day with your phone

Half the group is at the top lift, the other half is in the café, and your phone just died in the cold. A little phone prep in the morning keeps the group together and the day on the snow, not in the queue or the lost and found.

A morning routine, then ski apps. Stay on marked and open pistes unless you are trained and equipped for off-piste; check the resort’s avalanche and closure information every day.

Check the mountain before breakfast

Look at snow, wind and visibility, and which lifts and runs are open. Plan the first runs on the sunny side and save the shady ones for later. Compare weather apps for mountain forecasts.

Prepare the phone for cold

Charge it fully, keep it in an inner pocket close to your body and carry a small power bank. Download the resort’s piste map so you can read it without signal.

Stay together

Share live location with your group for the day and agree a meeting point and time. For sharing plans and costs across the trip, compare trip sharing apps; for the whole week, see how to plan a trip itinerary.

Track, then rest

Ski tracker apps record runs, lifts and vertical, which makes it easy to see when you are tired. Stop before the last run turns into a fall. Compare apps in ski apps.
