How to start running as a beginner

Most new runners quit for the same reason: they start too fast. They run until they cannot breathe, finish feeling awful and decide running is not for them. The beginners who keep going do the opposite. They mix running with walking, keep the pace easy enough to talk, and let the body adapt for weeks before asking more of it.

Start with walking breaks

Alternate short stretches of easy running with walking. As the weeks go by, the running parts get longer and the walking parts shorter. It does not feel like “real running” at first, but it is how most beginners get from nothing to running continuously without getting hurt or discouraged.

Slow down more than feels right

If you cannot speak in full sentences, you are going too fast. Easy running feels almost too slow, and that is the point: it builds endurance and keeps running pleasant enough to come back to. Speed comes later and largely by itself.

Rest and listen to your body

Muscles, tendons and joints adapt more slowly than your breathing. Running every other day at first gives them time. Mild muscle soreness is normal; sharp pain, pain that changes how you run or pain that gets worse is a signal to stop and rest, and to see a professional if it persists.

Give yourself a reason to go out

A plan, a coach in an app, a running friend or a local event makes it more likely you will put your shoes on when it is cold or you are tired. Compare apps for beginners and beyond in running apps.
