How to plan a trip itinerary
A good itinerary is not a minute-by-minute schedule. It is a plan that makes sure you see what matters most, wastes little time crossing town and still leaves space for the café you found by accident. The trick is to plan the shape of each day and leave the details loose.

Start with what cannot move
Put the fixed points in first: arrival and departure, hotel nights, train times and anything with a timed ticket. Those set the shape of the trip. Arrival and departure days usually have less time than you expect, so plan them lightly.
Group sights by area
Put each must-see on a map and you will see clusters. Plan each day around one area so you walk between sights rather than crossing the city repeatedly. It is the single biggest time saver in any itinerary.
Plan one main thing per day
Give each day one anchor, a museum, a hike, a day trip, and treat everything else as optional. Over-filled days lead to rushing and tiredness by the third day. Leave some evenings with no plan at all.
Keep it on your phone, offline
Save the plan, bookings and maps where you can open them without signal. Add the address of each stop in the local language for taxis. For apps that build and keep day-by-day plans, see trip planner apps; to write about the trip afterwards, see travel journal apps.

| 2. List the must-sees | and rank them honestly | not everything fits |
| 3. Group by area | one part of town per day | less time in transit |
| 4. One main thing a day | plus optional extras | room for rest and surprises |
| 5. Plan B for weather | an indoor option for each day | rain does not wreck the day |
Frequently asked questions
How do I plan a trip itinerary?
Fix flights, hotels and timed tickets first, list and rank the must-sees, group them by area, plan one main activity per day and keep a bad-weather backup.
How much should I plan for each day?
One main activity plus a few optional extras is enough for most people. Over-filled days lead to rushing and fatigue.
Should I use an app to plan a trip?
It helps to keep bookings, maps and the plan together and available offline. A shared document works too.
