How to block ads on your phone

You open a recipe and scroll past banner after banner before the first ingredient. A video starts playing on its own, the page jumps, you tap the wrong thing. Much of that noise can be switched off in a few minutes, and pages often load faster once it is gone.

A setup routine, then ad blocker apps. A blocker reduces ads and some tracking; it does not make you anonymous and does not protect you from scams. Some sites ask you to allow ads to keep reading; that is their call and yours.

Start with your browser

Turn on the tracking protection your browser already has. Choice of browser matters too; compare Safari vs Chrome and Chrome vs Firefox, or browse browser apps.

Add a content blocker

On iPhone, content blockers work inside Safari once you enable them in the Safari settings. On Android, options depend on the browser you use. Compare apps in ad blocker apps.

Ads inside apps

A browser blocker does not reach ads inside other apps. Switch off ad personalisation in your phone’s privacy settings, and delete apps that push ads you never asked for. If a free app asks for odd permissions, see how to lock apps on your phone.

Know the limits

Fake prize pop-ups and scam links can still slip through. Never enter codes or card details from a pop-up; see how to scan QR codes safely for the same rule with links.

Frequently asked questions

How do I block ads on my phone?

Turn on your browser’s tracking protection, add a content blocker and switch off ad personalisation in privacy settings.

Do ad blockers block ads inside apps?

A browser content blocker works in the browser. Ads inside other apps are handled by app settings or by removing the app.

Does an ad blocker make me anonymous?

No. It cuts ads and some tracking, but it does not hide who you are online or stop scams on its own.
