How to get your app recommended by AI assistants

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google “which app should I use for X”, the answer is built from web pages the assistant can read. Nobody can buy a mention, but you can make sure the right pages exist, say clearly what your app does and are open to the crawlers.

Checklist

Each item is something you control. None guarantees a mention.

ItemWhy it matters
Plain description of what the app does and for whomAssistants match a request to text, not to a brand name
A page per app on your own siteA source you control that assistants can quote
robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBotBlocked crawlers cannot read your pages for search answers
Listings on directories, rankings and reviewsMore independent pages that name the app for the same need
Consistent name everywhereDifferent spellings split what is said about the app

Say what the app does, in the words people ask

A request to an assistant reads like “an app to track my period on iPhone” or “a free budgeting app for couples”. If your store listing and website say only a slogan, there is little to match. Put the job, the audience and the platform in the first lines.

Let the crawlers in

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search and says sites that allow it can appear in its answers. Perplexity crawls with PerplexityBot. Check that your robots.txt and any bot protection do not block them on the pages you want quoted. Google’s AI answers draw on its regular index, so the usual Google basics apply.

Be named on pages that compare apps

Assistants lean on pages that compare options for a need: rankings, best-of lists, reviews. Being listed there adds independent sources that name your app next to its category. Censuus gives every added app a page open to search engines and AI crawlers, and adding it is free.

What about llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises a site for language models. It is a proposal, not a standard the big assistants have committed to reading, so treat it as optional and keep the effort on clear pages.

What does not work

Stuffing pages with prompts aimed at AI, buying fake reviews or posting the same text on dozens of sites. Assistants and search engines filter this, and it risks the pages you already have.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my app?

No. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT’s answers to buy; what it says comes from the pages it reads.

How does ChatGPT find apps?

For current recommendations it searches the web, with OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot among its crawlers, and builds the answer from the pages it reads.

Do I need llms.txt?

It is optional. Clear pages that crawlers can reach matter more.

Guides for app developers

Put your app in the ranking

Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw and by sponsorship, no bots. Listing is free; sponsorship raises placement.
