Ask Play and Play in Gemini: how Google now recommends your app

Short answer: Ask Play is the conversational search in Google Play, the feature behind the «Ask Play about this app» prompt, and since October 13, 2026 it can build side-by-side app comparisons right in search results. Play in Gemini recommends apps inside the Gemini app, and now in Gemini Live by voice, with a single-tap install. Both work from the same material: your store listing, its key features and your user reviews. So the way to show up well is plain listing work. Keep descriptions, tags and events fresh, upload sharp media, validate deep links and integrate the Engage SDK.

What Ask Play app comparisons change

Ask Play already understood context and follow-up questions. Now, when a user compares apps on details like subscription models or offline capabilities, it generates a comparison table and summarizes your store listing and user reviews to fill it. That means a vague description loses a row: if your listing never says the app works offline, the comparison has nothing to quote. Write the facts users compare on in plain words in your full description, and answer recurring questions in your replies to reviews. Our guide to Play store listing clicks covers how to measure whether the listing converts.

How Play in Gemini picks apps

When someone describes a need in Gemini, for example organizing family recipes or finding a shared task manager, Gemini matches the request to your store listing and key features and offers an install in one tap. Google says this drove over 6 million app installs in the two months after launch, and the same recommendations now work in voice conversations with Gemini Live. There is no separate submission: the listing is the input. Describe the jobs your app does in the words people use, not only in brand terms. Google’s checklist, step by step

Keep listings and events fresh: update descriptions, tags and promotional events in Play Console for new features, seasons and offers. Upload high-resolution media: clean images and video previews that hold up on every screen size; see our feature graphic guide. Validate deep links: Play Console now has a built-in deep link emulator to preview and test links without a physical device. Integrate the Engage SDK: it delivers personalized content to Apps Home, the You tab and Android tablets, and now supports 9 categories, including Education and Health & Fitness.

Does it help with lower fees too?

Yes, indirectly. The Engage SDK and Play Content on discovery surfaces are among the user journey guidelines of Google’s Apps Experience program, which offers a lower service fee rate card on earnings above $1M a year. So the same integration work that makes your app show up on these surfaces also counts toward that program. Games have the parallel Level Up program, and Game Stats unlocks Streaks, Leagues and Sprints in Play Games Sidekick.

Where Censuus fits

Ask Play and Gemini read what is written about your app; the more places describe it clearly, the better. Censuus ranks apps by visits and sponsorship, and adding your app is free on the List my app form. Apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher.
