Monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment on the App Store

Short answer: since spring 2026 you can let people pay for a yearly auto-renewable subscription in 12 monthly payments. It is not a new product: you add a monthly billing plan to an existing 1-year subscription, with the same product ID. It works on iOS 26.4 and later in every storefront except the United States and Singapore, your app must be built with the 26.5 SDK or later, and the 12 payments together may cost at most 1.5 times the upfront yearly price.

Setting it up in App Store Connect

Create or open a subscription with a 1 Year duration. Under Availability, first set up 1 Year Upfront: monthly billing is only offered in the countries or regions where upfront billing is available. Then click Set Up Availability under Monthly with 12-Month Commitment and choose the countries. When you add the price, you enter both an upfront and a monthly price in your base territory, and App Store Connect calculates the other storefronts. You can remove monthly billing later with Remove Monthly Billing; existing customers then do not renew at the end of their commitment.

Showing it in your paywall

Read pricingTerms on the product’s subscription info: a yearly subscription with monthly billing returns two entries, one with billingPlanType .upFront and one with .monthly, each carrying its own billingDisplayPrice, commitmentInfo and subscriptionOffers. Apple requires you to show both the monthly price and the total commitment amount before the purchase. To buy, call the usual product.purchase(options:) with the billing plan purchase option set to .monthly. Introductory, promotional and win-back offers and offer codes are per billing plan, so read offers from the monthly entry.

Access, cancellations and billing retry

Each month is an independent transaction, so grant access as you would for a monthly subscription, using the transaction’s own expirationDate; the expirationDate in commitmentInfo is the end of the whole year, for display only. A cancellation only turns off the next commitment: commitmentInfo.willAutoRenew becomes false while monthly billing and DID_RENEW notifications continue, so do not revoke access on DID_CHANGE_RENEWAL_STATUS when the plan is MONTHLY. There is no billing grace period: revoke on DID_FAIL_TO_RENEW and restore on recovery. If payment is not recovered within 90 days, the commitment ends.

Upgrades, downgrades and what users see

Upgrades are immediate: the commitment ends, the new plan starts, and the customer may get a prorated refund. Downgrades wait until the current 12-month commitment is complete. On the first purchase, the system shows a one-time disclosure sheet explaining the monthly payments and cancellation; subscription settings show how many payments remain, and Apple emails reminders, plus push notifications for those who opted in, before the next commitment. showManageSubscriptions opens that system page from your app. In Germany, Israel, South Africa and Türkiye, customers can cancel a subscription with immediate effect.
