App icon size for the App Store and Google Play

The App Store icon is designed at 1024 × 1024 pixels for iPhone, iPad and Mac (and Apple Vision Pro), as a layered icon the system masks into a rounded shape and scales down for smaller places. The Google Play store icon is a separate asset: a 512 × 512 pixel 32-bit PNG, sRGB, no larger than 1024 KB, uploaded as a full square without rounded corners or shadow, because Google Play adds both. This guide quotes Apple’s and Google’s specifications as they read on 28 September 2026.

App Store icon size: one 1024 × 1024 design

Apple’s specifications give one layout size per platform: 1024 × 1024 pixels for iOS, iPadOS and macOS, where the icon is square and the system masks it into a rounded rectangle; 1024 × 1024 for visionOS and 1088 × 1088 for watchOS, where it is masked to a circle; and 800 × 480 for tvOS, a landscape rectangle. You do not draw every small size yourself: the system automatically scales your icon for places such as Settings and notifications. Supported color spaces are sRGB, Gray Gamma 2.2 for grayscale, and Display P3 for wide color on every Apple platform except visionOS. You build the icon with Icon Composer or add it to an asset catalog in Xcode, and it ships inside your build, so changing the icon later means uploading a new app version and submitting it for review.

Layers, Liquid Glass and the dark, clear and tinted variants

Since Apple’s June 2025 update to the guidelines, iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS icons are layered: a background layer plus one or more foreground layers that take on Liquid Glass effects such as specular highlights, refraction and translucency. You can still provide a flattened image, but Apple says layers give you the most control. The workflow is to draw the foreground layers in your design tool, preferring vector graphics, then import them into Icon Composer, which is included with Xcode, to set the background, place the layers, and mark the default, dark and mono variants. People can set Home Screen icons to default, dark, clear or tinted; you can design each variant, and the system generates any you do not provide. Apple’s changelog shows the guidance was refined for Liquid Glass again on June 8, 2026.

Google Play icon size: 512 × 512

Google Play requires an app icon before you can publish the store listing, and it is not your launcher icon: it should be a higher-fidelity version of it. The asset is 512 × 512 pixels, a 32-bit PNG with alpha, sRGB, with a maximum file size of 1024 KB. Upload it as a full square: Google Play applies the rounded mask itself, with a radius equal to 30% of the icon size, and adds the drop shadow, so an asset with its own rounded corners or outer shadow will look wrong. Shadows and lighting inside the artwork are fine. Google advises a brand-appropriate background without transparency, since transparent areas show the Play UI background color. The icon appears on your listing, in search results and in top charts. Your Android launcher icon is a separate adaptive icon, covered in Android’s own guidelines.

What not to put on an icon

Google Play forbids badges or text that suggest ranking, price, Google Play categories or program participation, or that otherwise mislead users, and asks you not to use text or graphics that promote deals or incentivize installs. Apple’s guidance is about clarity rather than policy: embrace simplicity, prefer a simple background such as a solid color or gradient, include text only when it is essential to your experience or brand, prefer illustrations to photos, do not replicate UI components or Apple hardware, and avoid a design someone might mistake for another app. Both points matter in search results, where your icon sits next to competitors at a small size.

Where Censuus fits

Your icon is also how people recognise your app outside the stores. On Censuus, apps are ranked by the real visit traffic they draw, and each listing shows the icon from your store page; adding your app is free on the submit page. Sponsorship raises placement and adds a followed link to your website; details are on the sponsor page. For the rest of the store assets, see App Store screenshot sizes and app preview video specs. We do not promise downloads or store rankings.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an App Store app icon?

1024 × 1024 pixels for iPhone, iPad and Mac, designed square; the system applies the rounded mask and scales it down for smaller places. Apple Watch uses 1088 × 1088 and Apple TV 800 × 480.

What size is the Google Play store icon?

512 × 512 pixels, a 32-bit PNG in sRGB, no larger than 1024 KB. Upload it as a full square without rounded corners or a drop shadow, because Google Play adds both.

Should I round the corners of my app icon?

No, on either store. Apple’s system masks iOS, iPadOS and macOS icons into a rounded rectangle, and Google Play applies a corner radius equal to 30% of the icon size.

Do I need a dark mode app icon on iOS?

It is optional. People can set icons to default, dark, clear or tinted, and the system generates any variant you do not provide, and you can design each variant yourself in Icon Composer.
