How to style text in Instagram Stories

A Story gets a moment before the thumb moves on. If the words are thin, pale and tucked under the reply bar, the moment is gone. Good story text is not fancy. It is readable at a glance, and it looks like you meant it.

Rules for readable text, then story font apps. Fonts come with licences. For a business or brand account, check that the font you use is cleared for commercial use.

Pick fonts that fit

One bold font for the main line and one plain font for the rest is plenty. Script fonts are lovely for a word or two, hard work for a sentence. Compare font and sticker apps in story font apps.

Make it readable

On a busy photo, add a soft shadow, a solid label behind the text or darken the image a touch. Keep the key words clear of the top and bottom of the screen, where the profile bar and reply field sit.

Keep a style

Use the same fonts and colours each time, so people recognise your Stories before they see your name. For brand colours, see colour picker apps for Mac.

Go beyond one frame
