Blood pressure apps

Your phone cannot measure blood pressure on its own: you need a cuff monitor, and the app keeps the readings. For a simple diary from a Ukrainian developer, Blood Pressure App: BP Tracker. With Apple Watch and Apple Health, SmartBP. To pull readings from a Bluetooth monitor of many brands, Blood Pressure Diary by MedM. To scan the monitor’s screen with the camera, Feeltracker. With an OMRON or Withings monitor, their own apps, OMRON connect and Withings.

How we picked: we read each app’s own App Store description and checked who publishes it. We kept apps that log readings or sync a cuff monitor, and left out apps that claim to work out your blood pressure from the camera or a fingertip without a cuff. None of these apps diagnose anything; talk to your doctor about your numbers.

Can a phone measure blood pressure?

No. The apps here say so themselves: SmartBP notes that it does not measure blood pressure and needs a separate monitor, and BP Tracker says the same. Measure with a cuff monitor, then type the reading in, let a Bluetooth monitor send it, or scan the monitor’s screen. Apps that promise a reading from the camera or a fingertip alone are not on this list.

A blood pressure diary

Blood Pressure App: BP Tracker comes from a developer in the Ternopil region of Ukraine and has a Ukrainian interface. Add your blood pressure and pulse, and it draws graphs and builds a report you can share with your doctor. SmartBP records, tracks and shares readings on iPhone and Apple Watch, works with Apple Health so a connected monitor’s readings arrive on their own, and helps you spot trends if you live with high blood pressure. Feeltracker reads the numbers off your monitor’s screen through the camera, works with OMRON and other brands, logs several readings a day for averages and needs no account.

Syncing a Bluetooth monitor

Blood Pressure Diary by MedM works with or without registration, takes readings manually or over Bluetooth from a wide range of supported monitors, and also logs medication, heart rate, oxygen saturation and weight. You choose whether data stays on the phone or is also backed up to the MedM cloud. OMRON connect syncs OMRON monitors, scales and thermometers over Bluetooth, shows trends, alerts you to notable changes and shares readings with a doctor or family; medication tracking and detailed reports are premium. Withings is the app for Withings devices, with blood pressure next to weight, activity and sleep.

Remember the pills too

If you take blood pressure medication, a pill reminder app keeps the schedule, and a smart scale app puts your weight next to your readings.
