Background remover apps: change the background of a photo
These apps cut the subject out of a photo and put it on a new background in a tap. Photoroom is built for product photos and edits whole batches. Pixelcut removes backgrounds from photos and videos, puts products in AI scenes and blurs portraits. Picsart and Canva add background removal to a full photo and design editor, and Background Eraser makes clean transparent cutouts to use as stickers.
How we chose: apps that remove or replace a photo background on the phone, free to download and sold by the maker itself, with features taken from each app’s store description. We leave out user counts and subscription prices.
Photoroom: backgrounds for product photos
Photoroom removes and replaces photo backgrounds instantly and is built for selling online. From a single product photo it creates lifestyle, flat lay and on-model shots, batch-edits a whole catalog with consistent results, exports images sized for marketplaces and publishes listings straight to Shopify. Its listing includes Ukrainian.
Pixelcut: photos and videos
Pixelcut removes backgrounds from photos or videos, works on products, portraits and hair, and replaces the background with a colour or an AI-generated scene, such as marble or a beach. Blur Background adds DSLR-style portrait bokeh, the Batch Editor changes backgrounds, colours and sizes for many photos at once, and Magic Eraser removes objects, people or text.
Picsart and Canva: background inside a full editor
Picsart has a Background Remover to switch backdrops and Smart Background to blend a context-aware backdrop, next to effects, filters, retouch tools and collages. Canva removes backgrounds with its background eraser inside an editor for social media posts, presentations, resumes and collages, so the cut-out photo goes straight into a design. Canva’s listing includes Ukrainian.
Background Eraser: transparent cutouts
Background Eraser makes a picture’s background transparent, so you can use the result as a sticker in other apps for photomontage, collages and composite photos. It cuts out automatically with AI, and you can refine by hand with Star mode, which detects edges, or Auto mode, which erases similar pixels.
Which one to use
For photos of things you sell, start with Photoroom or Pixelcut. To blur the background behind a person, Pixelcut. To change the background and keep editing, Picsart, and to drop the photo into a post or a slide, Canva. For a transparent sticker, Background Eraser. To erase a person or object rather than the whole background, see object remover apps.
