How to restore old photos

Faded colours, scratches, creases and water stains: old prints in a shoebox are slowly disappearing. Digitising and restoring them gives your family a copy that will not fade further. Modern AI tools make restoration far quicker, but a good result still starts with a good scan and a careful eye.

A step-by-step workflow, then restore old photos apps, with a section for restoration apps rising by visits on the Censuus ranking. AI restoration can invent details such as faces or textures; keep the original scan alongside the restored copy.

Start with a good capture

A flatbed scanner gives the best detail. With a phone, lay the photo flat in soft, even daylight, avoid glare and shoot straight from above. Remove prints from sticky albums gently, or capture them in place if they resist.

Keep originals untouched

Save the raw scan before any edits, named with what you know: people, place and approximate year. You can always re-edit from the original as tools improve.

Restore with a critical eye

Fix scratches and stains first, then use AI restoration to sharpen and recover faded areas, and colourise if you like. Compare the result with the original: AI can change faces or add detail that was never there. Keep edits that stay true to the photo.

Share and back up

Back up both originals and restored versions in two places, and share them with family, who may know names and dates you do not. For organising your library, see how to clean up your photo library; compare apps in restore old photos apps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I restore an old photo on my phone?

Photograph it flat in soft, even light, keep the original, then use a restoration app to fix damage, sharpen and colourise if you want.

Is it better to scan or photograph old photos?

A scanner usually captures more detail, but a careful phone photo in good light works well for many prints.

Can AI restoration change a photo?

Yes. It can invent details, especially in faces. Compare with the original and keep both versions.
