Fixing YouTube Error 153 in embedded players

Short answer: error 153 means the request to YouTube’s embedded player did not include an HTTP Referer header or equivalent identification of your app. YouTube now requires every embed to identify itself this way. On websites, the fix is usually to stop suppressing the Referer, for example with a no-referrer policy. In mobile and desktop apps, where a WebView sends no Referer by default, set it yourself to an HTTPS URL built from your app ID or bundle ID, such as https://com.example.app.

YouTube embedded player error codes

From the YouTube IFrame Player API reference, read 1 October 2026.

CodeMeaning
2Invalid parameter, such as a video ID that isn’t 11 valid characters
5The content can’t play in an HTML5 player, or another HTML5 player error
100Video not found: removed or private
101 and 150The owner doesn’t allow playback in embedded players
153No HTTP Referer header or equivalent API client identification

Websites

Browsers normally send the Referer for you, so error 153 on a web page usually means something removes it. Check for a Referrer-Policy: no-referrer header or meta tag, a referrerpolicy="no-referrer" attribute on the iframe, or a player opened with window.open and the noreferrer feature. YouTube recommends strict-origin-when-cross-origin, which is already the default in many browsers.

Android and iOS apps

A WebView sends no Referer by default, which is why apps hit 153 most often. Player inside a bundled HTML file: pass a base URL when you load it, loadDataWithBaseURL on Android or loadHTMLString:baseURL: on iOS. Loading https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID directly: add a Referer header, through the additionalHttpHeaders map of loadUrl on Android or on the URLRequest you pass to WKWebView.load on iOS. Android Custom Tabs: put Intent.EXTRA_REFERRER on the intent with an android-app:// URI of your package name. SFSafariViewController can’t set a Referer, so set the origin player parameter instead. In each case the value is an HTTPS URL whose domain is your store app ID, for example https://com.example.app; Apple platforms use the bundle ID. On macOS follow the iOS steps; on Windows set the header through HttpRequestHeaders.Referrer or CoreWebView2HttpRequestHeaders.SetHeader.

Flutter, React Native and other wrappers

If you embed YouTube through a package such as a Flutter or React Native player plugin, the fix belongs in how that package loads the player. YouTube’s policy says owners of such libraries must read the app ID from the environment where possible, or let developers pass it in, and then set the Referer and, where appropriate, the widget_referrer player parameter. So update the package first and look for an option to pass your app ID or a base URL; if there is none, check its issue tracker before patching it yourself. While you’re updating dependencies, see Flutter 3.47 and React Native 0.87.

Where Censuus fits

Video that plays keeps people in your app; being found brings them there. Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw, and adding your app is free through the List my app form. Placement comes from traffic and sponsorship: apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher. For store videos rather than embeds, see App Store preview video specs.

Frequently asked questions

What does YouTube error 153 mean?

The request to the embedded player didn’t include an HTTP Referer header or equivalent API client identification, which YouTube requires from every embed.

How do I fix error 153 in an Android WebView?

Load a bundled HTML player with loadDataWithBaseURL and a base URL, or load the embed URL with loadUrl and a Referer header in additionalHttpHeaders, set to https:// plus your app ID.

How do I fix error 153 in a WKWebView on iOS?

Use loadHTMLString with a baseURL for a bundled HTML player, or add a Referer header to the URLRequest for the embed URL. Use https:// plus your bundle ID, in lowercase in Google’s example.

What Referer value should my app send?

A fully qualified HTTPS URL whose domain is the app ID registered with the store, such as https://com.example.app. On Apple platforms that is the bundle ID.

What is the difference between YouTube errors 150, 101 and 153?

101 and 150 mean the video’s owner blocks embedded playback, which you can’t fix in code. 153 means your embed didn’t identify itself, which you fix by sending a Referer.
