Older iOS Simulator runtimes and Rosetta destinations in Xcode

Short answer: open Xcode > Settings > Components, click Add Platforms under Other Installed Platforms, pick the iOS version and click Download & Install. From Terminal, xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion 18.0 does the same. If a Rosetta run destination is missing, the runtime was probably downloaded as the Apple silicon variant, which saves space but can’t run under Rosetta; get the universal one with xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -architectureVariant universal.

xcodebuild commands for simulator runtimes

From Apple’s “Downloading and installing additional Xcode components”, read 1 October 2026.

Installing an older runtime

In Xcode > Settings > Components, the Add Platforms button lists previously released simulator runtimes; filter by platform and version, select one or more and click Download & Install. If a project’s platform has no runtime at all, Xcode also shows a Get button next to the run destination, but that installs the newest runtime only. From the command line, -buildVersion picks an OS version and -exportPath saves the download so you can install it on other Macs. To install a downloaded file, select the Xcode you want with xcode-select -s, run xcodebuild -runFirstLaunch to install system components including simctl, then run xcodebuild -importPlatform with the .dmg.

Why the Rosetta destination is missing

Apple’s documentation says Xcode chooses which variant of a runtime to download: the universal variant on Intel Macs and when you use Rosetta run destinations, and otherwise the Apple silicon variant to save disk space. An Apple silicon variant is arm64 only, so it offers no Rosetta destination. Download the universal variant with -architectureVariant universal and the Rosetta destinations come back. Xcode 27 also fixed Components showing a Get button for simulators already downloaded and used with Rosetta. Rosetta itself is winding down, see Rosetta 2 end of support, so treat this as a stopgap while dependencies add arm64 slices.

Removing runtimes and Xcode 27 changes

Settings > Components shows how much storage each component uses. Click the information button next to a runtime, then Delete, to remove it. Xcode 27 resolved an issue where some deleted runtimes reappeared after a reboot, and its runtimes include a pre-built dyld cache, so a simulator’s first launch is much faster. Xcode 27 installs and runs only on Apple silicon Macs; its other requirements and dates are in Xcode 27 release date and requirements, and the new device tooling in Xcode 27 Device Hub.

Where Censuus fits

Testing on the OS versions your users run keeps reviews healthy; being found brings those users in. Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw, and adding your app is free through the List my app form. Placement comes from traffic and sponsorship: apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install an older iOS simulator in Xcode?

Go to Xcode > Settings > Components, click Add Platforms under Other Installed Platforms, choose the iOS version and click Download & Install. Or run xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion with the version you need.

Why is the Rosetta simulator destination not showing in Xcode?

The runtime is likely the Apple silicon variant, which is arm64 only and offers no Rosetta destination. Download the universal variant with xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -architectureVariant universal.

How do I remove old iOS simulators to free space?

In Xcode > Settings > Components, click the information button next to the runtime and choose Delete. Xcode shows how much storage you recover.

How do I install a simulator runtime I downloaded on another Mac?

Download it with -exportPath, copy the .dmg, then on the other Mac run xcode-select -s with your Xcode, xcodebuild -runFirstLaunch and xcodebuild -importPlatform with the file.

Does Xcode 27 run on Intel Macs?

No. Apple’s release notes say Xcode 27 installs and runs only on Apple silicon Macs.
