Kotlin Gradle plugin, Gradle and AGP: which versions work together
Short answer: Kotlin Gradle plugin 2.4.20–2.4.21 fully supports Gradle 7.6.3 through 9.7.0 and Android Gradle plugin 8.5.2 through 9.3.1, according to the Kotlin docs updated on October 8, 2026. On the Android side, AGP 9.4 needs at least Gradle 9.6.0. So KGP 2.4.21 with AGP 9.3 and Gradle 9.5 to 9.7 sits inside both tested ranges. AGP 9.4 still builds with KGP 2.4.21, but it is past Kotlin’s fully supported maximum.

What “fully supported” means
The Kotlin table gives a minimum and a maximum for each range. The minimum is a hard floor: KGP 2.4.21 and the kotlin-multiplatform plugin need Gradle 7.6.3 or later for the project to compile. The maximum is the newest version JetBrains has tested without deprecated Gradle methods and properties. Kotlin’s docs say you can use newer Gradle and AGP releases, but you may see deprecation warnings or find that some new features do not work. For Kotlin 2.0.20 through 2.1.10 there is one footnote: they are fully compatible with Gradle up to 8.6, and Gradle 8.7 to 8.10 work except for withJava() deprecation warnings in Kotlin Multiplatform JVM targets.
Minimum Gradle for each Android Gradle plugin
Google’s AGP docs list the Gradle version each plugin release requires: AGP 9.4 needs Gradle 9.6.0, AGP 9.3 needs 9.5.0, AGP 9.2 needs 9.4.1, AGP 9.1 needs 9.3.1, AGP 9.0 needs 9.1.0, and AGP 8.11 through 8.13 need Gradle 8.13. AGP 9.4 also needs JDK 17 and supports up to API level 37. Change the wrapper with ./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 9.6.0 and run it twice, so the wrapper itself updates too. Put both together and pick the AGP first, then a Gradle version at or above its minimum, then a KGP whose range covers both.
AGP 9 and built-in Kotlin
AGP 9 has a runtime dependency on Kotlin Gradle plugin 2.2.10: if your build declares a lower KGP, AGP 9 upgrades it to 2.2.10. With built-in Kotlin on by default, Android modules no longer apply org.jetbrains.kotlin.android themselves, but the KGP version on the classpath still decides which Kotlin compiler you get, so keep it in your version catalog. Steps and the opt-out flags are in the AGP 9 migration guide. For the Gradle 9 side, including Java 17 to run the build, see the Gradle 9 upgrade.
Which versions to pick in October 2026
The newest stable Kotlin is 2.4.21, released on October 8, 2026, and Kotlin 2.5.0-Beta1 has been out since September 23. A setup inside every tested range is KGP 2.4.21, AGP 9.3.x and Gradle 9.5.0 to 9.7.0. The newest Gradle is 9.8.2, released on October 19, 2026; it is past KGP 2.4.21’s tested maximum, and Gradle’s own matrix tests Kotlin only up to 2.4.20-RC2, so on 9.8 expect possible deprecation warnings too. Its patch notes are in the Gradle 9 upgrade. If you need AGP 9.4, for example for API 37, use Gradle 9.6.0 or 9.7.0 with KGP 2.4.21 and expect possible deprecation warnings until a Kotlin release raises its tested AGP maximum. What changed in Kotlin itself is in Kotlin 2.4.20 and the 2.5 release date. Flutter pins its own tested set, listed in Flutter 3.47.

Frequently asked questions
Which Gradle version does Kotlin 2.4.21 support?
Gradle 7.6.3 as the minimum and Gradle 9.7.0 as the newest fully supported version.
Which Android Gradle plugin versions work with Kotlin 2.4.21?
AGP 8.5.2 through 9.3.1 are fully supported. Newer AGP releases can work, with possible deprecation warnings.
What Gradle version does AGP 9.4 need?
At least Gradle 9.6.0, with JDK 17.
Can I use AGP 9.4 with Kotlin 2.4.21?
Yes, but AGP 9.4 is newer than the 9.3.1 maximum that the Kotlin docs list as fully supported, so you may see deprecation warnings or features that do not work.
Which Kotlin Gradle plugin does AGP 9 require?
AGP 9 has a runtime dependency on KGP 2.2.10 and upgrades a lower declared version to it.
