Using Claude, Codex and other agents in Android Studio

Short answer: Android Studio’s Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA) feature lets you run Anthropic’s Claude Agent, OpenAI’s Codex, Google Antigravity or any agent that speaks the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) inside the IDE, signed in with your own plan or an API key. Android Studio passes the agent your project graph and build setup and wires in tools such as build diagnostics, Compose Previews and emulator control. It is a preview, rolling out from the canary release of Android Studio Rabbit 2, announced on September 24, 2026.

What BYOA gives an agent

From the Android Developers Blog, September 24, 2026.

CapabilityWhat Google describes
Project contextFull project graph, build setup and platform details through ACP, so the agent can pick relevant files
IDE toolsBuild diagnostics, Jetpack Compose Previews, Android SDK tools and Android emulator control
ExecutionRead, write and edit files, run shell commands, run tests, search the web
SubagentsSpawn specialized agents for subtasks like code review or testing
PermissionsAct alone on routine work, pause for approval on riskier actions
PersistenceLong-running sessions; project skills, slash commands and memory load automatically

How to connect an agent

Install the latest Android Studio from the canary channel. In the agent window, choose Claude Agent, Codex or Antigravity, then sign in or enter an API key. Other ACP-compliant agents are in the registry under Settings → Tools → AI → Agents. Enterprise and consumer AI plans are supported, subject to the agent provider, and if one agent runs out of quota you can hand the work to another.

Where Gemini fits

The built-in Gemini agent stays in Android Studio. For the best Gemini experience Google recommends the Google Antigravity agent, which gives access to its latest Gemini models and more AI usage quota, and which you can sign into with a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan or use with a Gemini API key at per-token rates. Organizations on Gemini Enterprise can use either the built-in agent or Antigravity and keep Google Cloud’s security and privacy.

What to watch as a preview

BYOA is a preview in the canary channel, so behavior can change before a stable release; Google asks for bug reports through its issue tracker. Agents can edit files and run commands, so use the granular permissions to require approval for risky actions. If you are targeting new platform features with an agent’s help, start from the Android 17 behavior changes checklist; for faster device testing see ADB Wi-Fi 2.0, and for exposing your own app to agents see Android AppFunctions.

Where Censuus fits

Agents help you ship faster; being found brings users to what you ship. Censuus ranks apps by the visits they draw, and adding your app is free on the List my app form. Placement comes from traffic and sponsorship: apps climb on the visits they draw, and a sponsor can pay to rise higher.
