Math solver apps

Take a photo of a problem and the app shows the solution. Photomath by Google breaks it into steps, and the steps are in the free version. GeoGebra is for graphs, geometry and equations. Mathway and Symbolab give the answer or basic steps for free, with fuller explanations on a subscription.

How we chose: maths solver apps sold by their own developer or by a seller listed as a trader on the App Store, with features taken from each app’s store description. No prices, download counts or ratings.

Photomath: the solution step by step

Photomath by Google scans a problem that is handwritten, in a textbook or on a screen and breaks the solution into small steps that explain what is done and why. Step by step explanations are included in the free version. It also handles word problems, draws interactive graphs and shows several solving methods, from arithmetic to calculus. Photomath Plus adds animated tutorials and textbook solutions.

GeoGebra: graphs, geometry and equations

GeoGebra Calculator Suite combines graphing, geometry, CAS and 3D calculators. It plots functions and surfaces, finds roots, extrema and intersections, solves equations, finds derivatives and integrals, builds tables of values and geometric constructions, and shows 3D objects in augmented reality. It suits you when you want to see how a function behaves, not just the answer.

Mathway and Symbolab: free answers, steps on a subscription

Mathway takes a typed or photographed problem and gives a free answer in algebra, trigonometry, calculus or statistics. Step by step solutions need a subscription. Symbolab also reads problems from a photo, word problems included, shows basic steps for free and unlocks more detailed explanations with a subscription. It bundles over five hundred calculators, from fractions to the Laplace transform.

Copy the answer or understand it

An answer without steps helps you check homework but does not teach. If the goal is to understand, pick Photomath with its explanations or GeoGebra, where you see the graph. For exam prep in Ukraine, see NMT prep apps, and for everything school related, school apps.
