How to wash clothes without ruining them

One red sock, one hot wash, and a whole load of shirts turns pink. Laundry disasters usually come from skipping the label or guessing the programme. A short routine before you press start keeps clothes looking new for longer.

A laundry routine, then washing machine apps. The care label and your machine’s manual come first; programme names and features differ by brand and model.

Let the label decide

The care label tells you the highest safe temperature, whether it can be tumble dried and how to iron it. When in doubt, wash cooler and air dry.

Sort before you load

Keep darks, lights and whites apart, and wash new coloured items separately the first few times. Zip zips, empty pockets and turn printed tops inside out.

Use the machine’s smarts

Connected machines let you start, pause and follow a cycle from your phone, get a notice when it finishes and download extra programmes. Get clothes out quickly so they do not crease or smell. Compare apps in washing machine apps.

Look after the machine

Leave the door and drawer open after a wash to dry, clean the filter and seal as the manual says and run a maintenance cycle now and then. For the rest of the home, see how to keep track of home maintenance and how to build a capsule wardrobe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop clothes shrinking in the wash?

Follow the care label, wash cooler and avoid tumble drying items that say not to.

Should I wash new clothes separately?

Yes for strong colours, at least the first few washes, so dye does not run onto other clothes.

Why do my clothes smell after washing?

Often they sat in the drum too long or the machine needs cleaning. Unload quickly and clean the filter and seal.
