How to test a game controller

Your character drifts left on its own, a button only works when you press hard, or a used controller looks perfect in photos. Before you blame the game or pay for a repair, test the controller properly. A few minutes with a tester shows exactly what works and what does not.

A step-by-step check, then gamepad tester apps, with a section for controller testers rising by visits on the Censuus ranking.

Check buttons and sticks

Open a tester and press every button, including clicking both sticks. Then let go of the sticks completely and watch whether the readout returns to centre. Movement while you are not touching them is stick drift.

Test range and triggers

Rotate each stick slowly around its full range and push to the edges; gaps or uneven circles show dead zones or wear. Squeeze triggers slowly to see a smooth range, and run vibration to check the motors.

Test the connection

Try the controller wirelessly and with a cable. Watch for input lag or drop-outs, and check that it charges and holds a charge. Problems on one connection only point to the cable, port or wireless module.

Before buying used

Ask to test the controller, or test it as soon as it arrives, while you can still return it. Run the same checklist. Compare tools in gamepad tester apps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a controller for stick drift?

Open a gamepad tester, let go of both sticks and watch the readout. If it moves without you touching the sticks, that is drift.

How do I test a used controller before buying?

Test every button, both sticks at rest and through their full range, triggers, vibration, wireless and cable connection, and charging.

Can I test a controller with my phone?

Yes. Connect it by Bluetooth or cable and use a gamepad tester app to see every input.
