Travel journal apps: remember where you went without writing every night

Most travel journals die on the third evening, when you are too tired to write. The apps that last do part of the work for you. Polarsteps records your route as you move, Journi turns photos and short notes into a timeline, and been simply colours in the countries you have visited. A newer group of apps goes further and builds the journal from photos you have already taken.

How we chose: established travel journal and travel map apps, compared on how much they ask of you during the trip. Features from each App Store listing, read in October 2026.

New apps that turn your photos into a travel map

Younger apps in the Censuus catalogue that work from the photo library you already have, so past trips count too.

Ranked by visit traffic and sponsorship on Censuus, not editorial opinion. The list changes as new apps appear and gain traffic.

If you want it to record itself

Polarsteps tracks your route as you travel and pins photos to the places you took them, so the journal grows even on days you write nothing. Friends and family can follow the trip as it happens, and afterwards you can turn it into a printed book. It also plans itineraries, which helps on longer, multi-stop trips.

If you like a few words with the pictures

Journi is closer to a diary: you add photos, notes and maps to a timeline, choose which photos stay private, and can build a timeline together with travel companions. It works offline and syncs later, which matters on trains and in places with poor signal.

If you only want the map

Some people do not want a diary at all, just the satisfying picture of where they have been. been keeps a list and a world map of the countries and US states you have visited, optionally with dates, and lets you compare maps with friends.

Which one to pick

Hands-off route and a book at the end: Polarsteps. Photos with notes and offline use: Journi. Just a map of countries: been. If your trips already live in your camera roll, the newer apps below can rebuild them without any logging.
