How to measure noise levels with your phone

The bar downstairs, the road outside the bedroom, the open-plan office. You know it is loud. A noise meter app turns that feeling into a log you can compare night by night, as long as you know what a phone can and cannot measure.

A measuring routine, then noise meter apps. Phone microphones are not calibrated sound level meters, so readings are estimates. For a formal complaint or a dispute, ask your local authority or landlord how noise is officially measured.

Know what the phone hears

Phone microphones are tuned for voices and vary between models. Use the app to compare levels over time on the same phone, not to prove an exact figure.

Build a noise diary

Measure at the same place and at the times the noise bothers you. Add a short note on the source and how long it lasted. A diary of dates and times is often more useful than a single reading.

Protect your hearing

If you have to raise your voice to talk to someone close by, the place is loud. Limit time there or use hearing protection at concerts and in workshops.

Act on what you find

For a bedroom by a busy road, see how to sleep with white noise. Before signing a lease, see how to rent an apartment safely; compare apps in noise meter apps.

Where should I hold the phone?

In the open at the spot you care about, out of a pocket or thick case, and in the same place each time.
