How to keep a movie diary
Ask someone what they watched last spring and they will struggle. A movie diary fixes that, and becomes more than a list: a record of evenings, people and moods. The trick is to log every film, however small, and add a few details that bring the memory back.

Log everything, right away
Add each film or show as soon as the credits roll, including the ones you did not finish. Logging the same evening takes seconds; reconstructing a month later rarely works. Over time, the full record becomes surprisingly interesting.
Add the context
Where you watched, who you watched with and what was going on in your life turn a list into a diary. Rereading “watched with Dad, rainy Sunday” brings back more than any rating.
Write one line, not a review
A single honest sentence about what stayed with you is enough. It is quicker than a review and tells you far more later than a number. Ratings change as you change; the line captures what you thought then.
Keep the watchlist in the same place
When someone recommends a film, add it to your watchlist straight away. Choosing from your own list is quicker than scrolling a streaming service. Compare apps that do both in movie tracker apps.
| Log | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Every film or episode | including the ones you abandoned | an honest record |
| When and where | cinema, sofa, plane | context brings the memory back |
| With whom | alone, partner, friends | films are often about the company |
| One honest line | what stayed with you | better than a star rating |
| A watchlist | what you want to see next | no more endless scrolling |
