How to get better sound from your headphones

You paid for good headphones and the bass still sounds thin, the calls sound far away and the noise cancelling barely notices the bus. Often the hardware is fine. The fit is wrong, the firmware is old, or the app that unlocks half the settings was never installed.

A tuning routine, then headphone apps. Turning the volume up is not tuning. Listening loud for long stretches can damage your hearing; if your ears ring or sound muffled after listening, take a break and see a doctor if it does not pass.

Start with the maker’s app

Many wireless headphones ship with a companion app from the brand. It is where you update firmware, change touch controls and switch noise cancelling modes. Find yours in headphone apps.

Fit before frequencies

In-ear buds only deliver bass when they seal the ear canal. Try the other tip sizes in the box, and some apps include a fit test. Over-ear pads should sit around the ear, not on it.

Tune it gently

Move one equalizer band at a time and listen to a song you know well. Small boosts usually sound better than big ones. For your listening, browse music apps or see how to get into podcasts.

Protect your ears

Noise cancelling lets you listen quieter on a train or plane, so use it instead of turning the volume up. Many phones can warn you about loud listening; turn that on. To check how loud a place is, see how to measure noise levels with your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my earbuds have no bass?

Usually the seal. Try a different ear tip size so the bud closes the ear canal.

Do I need the headphone maker’s app?

For firmware updates, equalizer and noise cancelling settings, it is the place to go.

How loud is too loud?

If you cannot hear someone next to you or your ears ring afterwards, turn it down. Ask a doctor about any hearing change that lasts.
