How to customize your iPhone home screen
A home screen is the most-seen screen you own, and most of them grew by accident: every new app dropped onto the next free slot. Customizing it is less about looks than about deciding what deserves the first glance. A calmer first page, a few widgets that show what you need, and everything else one swipe away.
A practical approach using built-in iOS features, then widget apps that add what iOS does not, with a section for widget apps rising by visits on the Censuus ranking.

Timedash Widgets4.4★ App Storeclock widgets inspired by the half-analogue, half-digital watches of the seventies.- Your app hereFree, foreverList my app
App Folder Launcher WidgetLoft4.5★ App Storesorts your apps into colourful folders and launches them with one tap from a home or lock screen widget, with no swiping through pages of icons.
Photo Album Widget3.5★ App Storeturns any album in Photos, or an iCloud shared album, into a photo frame widget that changes on the schedule you choose.
Decide what earns the first page
Put only the apps you open daily and deliberately on the first page. Apps you open out of habit, the endless feeds, are better a swipe or a search away. Long-press the screen, tap the page dots and hide whole pages; everything stays reachable in the App Library and search.
Group by task, not by colour
Folders named for what you do, such as travel, money or photos, are faster than scrolling. Widget launchers can go further and open folders from a single widget on the home or lock screen.
Add widgets that replace an app visit
A good widget saves you opening an app: today’s calendar, the weather, a rotating photo from an album you love, a clock styled the way you like. Avoid widgets you never look at; they are just larger icons.
Use Focus to change the screen with the day
Focus modes can show a different home screen page for work, evenings or sleep. A work page with work tools and an evening page without them is one of the simplest ways to keep the phone in its place. For more on that, see how to stop doomscrolling.
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. One first page | only the apps you use daily and on purpose | the first glance sets the tone |
| 2. Hide the rest | move other pages to the App Library | search finds them anyway |
| 3. Folders by task | travel, money, photos | fewer icons, faster finding |
| 4. Widgets you glance at | calendar, weather, photos, a clock | information without opening apps |
| 5. Focus pages | a different home screen for work and evenings | the phone matches the moment |
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my iPhone home screen look clean?
Keep one first page with daily apps, hide the other pages so apps live in the App Library, group what remains in folders and add only widgets you actually look at.
Can I have different home screens for work and home?
Yes. Focus modes on iPhone can show different home screen pages, so work apps appear during work and disappear in the evening.
Do I need an app to customize my home screen?
No, iOS covers the basics. Widget apps add things such as photo frames, styled clocks and folder launchers.
