WhatsApp vs Telegram: which is better in 2026?
Short answer: choose WhatsApp if you want every personal chat and call encrypted end to end without thinking about it, sign-in with just your phone number, and free voice and video calls with up to 32 people. Choose Telegram if you want your history in the cloud on every device at once, files up to 2 GB, groups of up to 200,000 members, channels and bots. Both are free to message.
How we compare: what each developer says the app does in its own App Store description, how it handles privacy, devices, groups, calls and files. Then the current standing of both on the Censuus ranking.

Privacy and encryption
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, so not even WhatsApp can read or listen to them, and group chats and calls are encrypted the same way. Telegram encrypts what it stores in its cloud and offers Secret Chats with end-to-end encryption and self-destructing messages. If you want end-to-end encryption everywhere by default, WhatsApp has it; in Telegram you open a Secret Chat.
Devices and chat history
Telegram keeps your history in its cloud and its apps are standalone, so phone, tablet and computer work at once without the phone connected, and the history takes no space on your device. WhatsApp starts from your phone number and lets you link other devices, including an iPad, to it.
Groups, channels and bots
Telegram groups hold up to 200,000 members, and channels and bots make it a tool for communities, news and teamwork. WhatsApp keeps group chats end-to-end encrypted and adds call links and screen sharing for group calls.
Calls and everyday sharing
WhatsApp offers free voice and video calls with up to 32 people that work even on slow connections, live location sharing, voice messages and Status updates that disappear after 24 hours. Telegram describes itself as pure messaging and puts its weight on files of any type up to 2 GB, photo and video editing tools and animated stickers.
The verdict
Pick WhatsApp for private chats and calls with family and friends. Pick Telegram for several devices, big files, channels and bots. More messengers: best messaging apps, and Telegram vs Viber.
Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp or Telegram better?
Neither outright. WhatsApp is better for end-to-end encrypted chats and calls by default; Telegram is better for several devices, large files, big groups, channels and bots.
Is WhatsApp more private than Telegram?
By default, yes: WhatsApp encrypts personal messages and calls end to end. Telegram does that only in Secret Chats; regular chats are stored in its cloud so they sync across devices.
Can I use Telegram without my phone online?
Yes. Telegram apps are standalone, so a computer or tablet keeps working with the phone switched off.
