The latest Compose BOM and Compose 1.12

Short answer: the latest Compose BOM is androidx.compose:compose-bom:2026.09.00. It maps the core Compose libraries, ui, foundation, runtime, animation and material, to 1.12.1, Material 3 to 1.4.0 and Material 3 adaptive to 1.3.0. Compose 1.12.0 went stable on August 12, 2026, and it raised Compose’s compileSdk to API 37, so you need AGP 9.2.0 or later to use it.

Using the BOM

Add the BOM as a platform dependency, implementation(platform("androidx.compose:compose-bom:2026.09.00")), plus the same for testImplementation and androidTestImplementation, then declare Compose libraries without versions. Raising the BOM version updates all of them together. To use a different version of one library, keep the BOM and add a version to that single dependency; Google notes that pulling an alpha this way can also pull alpha versions of its dependencies. The Compose compiler isn’t part of the BOM: since Kotlin 2.0 it ships with Kotlin and uses the same version, so update it through Kotlin, see Kotlin 2.4 and 2.4.20.

Compose 1.12 needs AGP 9.2 and compileSdk 37

The Compose 1.12 release notes state that Compose’s compileSdk moved to API 37 and that this means a minimum AGP of 9.2.0. So before moving to a BOM that brings Compose 1.12, set compileSdk to 37 and upgrade the Android Gradle plugin; if you are coming from AGP 8, follow the AGP 9 migration and the Gradle 9 upgrade first. Raising compileSdk doesn’t change your targetSdk; the Play deadline for that is a separate rule, covered in Google Play’s target API level requirement.

What’s new in Compose 1.12

Fonts: downloadable Google Fonts can be variable and no longer need font certificates added by hand. Color: non-sRGB color spaces such as Display P3 set on Paint or a shader are preserved on API 29 and later. Graphics: MeshGradientPainter, drawn with hardware-accelerated Canvas.drawMesh, replaces Modifier.meshGradient. Autofill: a credentialRequest semantics property connects text fields to Credential Manager on API 34 and later. Sound: clicks and navigation play the platform’s interaction sounds, and SoundEffectOnInteraction turns them off for a subtree. Testing: onRootWithViewInteraction scopes Compose lookups to a View matched by Espresso, which helps with hybrid screens such as RecyclerView rows, and captureToImage() can include popups and dialogs with their anchor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the latest Compose BOM version?

2026.09.00, the newest entry in Google’s BOM mapping as of 1 October 2026. It maps the core Compose libraries to 1.12.1 and Material 3 to 1.4.0.

What is the latest stable Jetpack Compose version?

Compose 1.12.1, released on September 9, 2026. Compose 1.12.0 went stable on August 12, 2026, and 1.13 is in alpha.

Why does Compose 1.12 require AGP 9.2?

Compose 1.12 compiles against API 37, and Google’s release notes say this requires Android Gradle plugin 9.2.0 or later.

Is the Compose compiler included in the BOM?

No. Since Kotlin 2.0 the Compose compiler ships with Kotlin and uses the Kotlin version, so you update it by updating Kotlin.

Can I use a different version of one Compose library with the BOM?

Yes. Keep the BOM platform dependency and add an explicit version to that one library; the explicit version wins.
