Best mushroom identification apps
To name a mushroom from a photo and read about look-alikes and toxicity, Picture Mushroom. For a free ID plus a map of your finds and a quiz, Champignouf. To pick the right day by the weather, Mushroomy. To find your way back to last year’s spot, Mushroom Hunt. For a simple photo ID with a history of finds, Mushroom Identification+. None of them can tell you a mushroom is safe to eat.
How we picked: we read each app’s own App Store description for what it does with a photo, whether it keeps a map or a log, and what it says about safety. We left out apps of Russian origin and apps whose developer we could not verify. We do not quote prices; check them in the store for your country.
Identify a mushroom from a photo
Picture Mushroom takes a photo or a picture from your gallery and offers several similar species, so you compare images and pick the closest. The result covers the name, habitat, how to identify it and toxicity, and the app warns you about some toxic mushrooms. Champignouf, listed in the store as Mushroom Identificator, identifies the species from a photo, includes a list of the most common edible mushrooms and has a quiz for testing yourself. Its core features are free, with ads. Mushroom Identification+ analyses a photo, shows the name, habitat and identifying features, and keeps a history of everything you identified.
Plan the trip by the weather
Mushroomy, from a developer in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, marks better and good foraging days in a calendar from recent and forecast weather, with temperature, humidity and wind. It has a species guide with edible and toxic filters, seasonal and habitat notes, a photo calendar for your finds and reminders. It needs iOS 26.2 or later, and the full calendar and species guide are in Mushroomy PRO.
Get back to your spot
Mushroom Hunt is a foraging journal with a map and a compass. Start an expedition and it tracks your route; snap a find and it saves the location with weather, GPS coordinates and date. Next season, pick the mushroom on the map and the compass shows direction, distance and walking time. The expedition shows on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, and it works without an account. Champignouf and Picture Mushroom can also save the places where you found mushrooms.
Never eat a mushroom because an app said so
Photo identification gives a guess, and many toxic mushrooms look like edible ones. Mushroomy says itself that it should not be the only way you decide whether a mushroom is safe to eat. Use the apps to learn names and keep track of spots, and check anything you plan to cook with an experienced forager. For plants rather than fungi, see plant identification apps.
