Best knitting row counter apps

For a counter that follows your pattern, with row reminders and voice control, My Row Counter. To track your place inside a chart or written pattern, knitCompanion. For a plain counter with a tap history and a Ukrainian interface, Knitting Counter or Knitly. To learn to knit or crochet from videos with a counter built in, YarnPal.

How we picked: we read each app’s own App Store description for how it counts rows and stitches, whether it shows your pattern next to the counter, and what is free. We left out apps of Russian origin and apps whose developer we could not verify. We do not quote prices; check them in the store for your country.

A counter that follows your pattern

My Row Counter imports a pattern from a web page or a PDF and links to Ravelry, so the pattern and the counter sit together. You can run several counters for increases, a motif or a colour change, set reminders that pop up on a given row, and say a word to add a row while your hands stay on the needles. It works without setup as a basic counter too. Syncing between devices, Apple Watch control and PDF notes are in its premium tier. knitCompanion is built for following a pattern row by row: free basics track your row and your place along it, keep counters for each project, link to Ravelry and Dropbox and sync with iCloud, and it works without internet. In-app purchases add markers on the pattern, reminders for repeats and voice commands.

Just count, in Ukrainian

Knitting Counter switches between rows and stitches, keeps a history of every tap, counts in steps and in full-screen landscape, and holds several counters in one project with a cover photo and notes. Apple Watch counting and a pattern viewer are in its premium plan, and the free version shows ads. Knitly is the simplest: tap the screen to add a row, long press to take one off, keep separate counters for increases and decreases, show a chart photo while you count and time your sessions.

Learn to knit with a counter built in

YarnPal teaches crochet and knitting from scratch with beginner courses and full project videos filmed from several angles, then gives you patterns by skill level. Its row counter tracks rows, rounds, stitches and repeats and saves your place when you pause. It can identify a stitch from a photo and turn a PDF or web pattern into an easy-to-follow format. YarnPal Premium is a subscription.
