How to understand how AI and chatbots work
You can use a chatbot every day without knowing how it works, but understanding the basics makes you much better at it. You will know why it sounds confident when it is wrong, why the way you ask changes the answer, and what to check before trusting it. The core ideas fit in an afternoon, no maths required.

Start with the core idea
A language model is trained on a very large amount of text and learns to generate the words that are likely to come next, given what came before. Much of what feels like understanding comes from that. It also explains why answers can sound right and still be wrong.
Learn why it makes mistakes
Models can produce confident statements that are not true, often called hallucinations. They may not know recent events and can reflect biases in their training data. For anything important, such as health, money or law, check the answer against a trusted source.
Practise asking well
Give context, say what you want and in what form, and ask follow-up questions. Asking it to explain its reasoning or to list what it is unsure about often improves the answer. Try the same question in different ways and compare.
Learn a little at a time
Short lessons on one concept at a time, mixed with trying things yourself, build real understanding faster than long courses you never finish. Compare apps in apps to learn AI.
| Concept | In plain words | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Predicting text | it generates likely next words | fluent is not the same as true |
| Training | it learned patterns from huge amounts of text | it reflects that data, gaps included |
| Mistakes | it can invent facts confidently | check important answers |
| Prompting | context and clear instructions help | better questions, better answers |
| Limits | knowledge cut-offs, privacy, bias | know when not to rely on it |
Frequently asked questions
How do AI chatbots work, in simple terms?
They are language models trained on large amounts of text that generate likely next words based on your question and the conversation so far.
Why do AI chatbots make things up?
Because they generate plausible text rather than looking up facts, they can produce confident answers that are wrong. Check important answers against trusted sources.
How can I get better answers from AI?
Give context, be clear about what you want and the format, ask follow-up questions and compare different phrasings.
