How to structure an academic essay

The deadline is next week, the blank document is open, and you have a pile of open tabs full of sources. The problem is rarely the writing itself. It is the shape. Decide your argument first and build each section to carry one piece of it, and the words come much easier.

A planning routine, then academic writing apps. Your course handbook and style guide decide the format, the citation style and whether AI tools are allowed. When in doubt, ask your tutor; academic integrity rules apply to every draft.

Start with the question

Underline the task words, such as compare, evaluate or explain. They tell you what kind of answer is expected. Then write your argument in one sentence.

Build the outline

Give each section a single point that supports the argument, with the evidence you will use. The introduction sets out the argument; the conclusion shows what you proved, without new material.

Keep sources tidy from day one

Record the source, page and quote the moment you use it, in the citation style your course requires. A writing app can format references for you. Compare apps in academic writing apps.

Draft fast, revise slow

Write the first draft without stopping to polish, then revise for argument, structure and finally language. Read it aloud to catch clumsy lines. For grammar, see how to improve your English grammar; for a wider study setup, see how to stay organized at university.
