How to read a weather forecast
The app said a chance of rain. You left the umbrella at home because a chance is not a promise. Then it poured. The forecast was not wrong. It was telling you something you read differently, and once you know the language, the same screen plans your day.
The key numbers on a forecast and what they mean, then weather apps. Apps take their data from different weather models and services, so two apps can disagree. For storms, floods and heat, follow the official warnings from your national weather service.

Chance of rain is about likelihood
A chance of rain says how likely it is that rain falls where you are during that time, not how much falls or for how long. Look at the hourly view to see when it is likely and the amount to see how heavy.
Dress for feels like
Wind and humidity change how cold or hot it feels. On a windy winter day the feels-like value is the one your fingers will notice. Check the air too; see how to check air quality before going outside.
Trust tomorrow more than next week
Forecasts are more reliable for the next day or two than for the days after. Plan the outline of a trip on a long-range forecast and check again the day before.
Pick an app you can read
Some apps show radar and hourly charts, others keep it simple. Compare them in weather apps. Surfers and sailors read a different kind of forecast; see how to read a surf forecast.
| What you see | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Chance of rain | how likely rain is at your spot | pack for it if it matters |
| Feels like | temperature with wind and humidity | dress for this one |
| Wind and gusts | steady wind vs short bursts | gusts matter for bikes |
| Hourly view | when, not just whether | time your errands |
| Days ahead | less certain further out | check again closer |
