Most well-known budgeting apps, YNAB, Monarch Money and Copilot among them, work by connecting to your bank through an aggregator. Expensa takes the opposite route: no bank login at all, with Apple Pay payments logged through a Shortcut and everything else added by voice or by hand. Here’s what that trade looks like in practice.
Compared on the features that decide the choice, how transactions arrive, what you share, where data lives and maturity, from each app's public listing on 2026-09-24. This is a fit call, not a popularity ranking. Censuus ranks apps by the traffic they draw and by sponsorship, so paying also raises placement.

Privacy and simplicity. Nothing reads your bank account, there’s no sign-up, and your data stays in your own iCloud. For Apple Pay-heavy spenders, logging is close to hands-free, and the multi-currency handling is unusually thorough for travellers and expats.
Coverage. A connected bank feed catches everything, transfers, direct debits and card payments outside Apple Pay, without you entering it. The established apps also bring years of history, and some run on web and Android as well.
It comes down to what you’d rather give up: bank access or complete automatic coverage. If you’d rather keep your bank login to yourself and you pay mostly with Apple Pay, choose Expensa. If you want every transaction imported and don’t mind connecting your bank, choose a bank-sync app.
Not automatically. Only Apple Pay taps log themselves; other spending needs adding by voice, by hand, or through a CSV, PDF, or TXT import.
Expensa imports CSV, PDF, and TXT files, and exports the same way.
